The Partner Who Isn't a Member Yet

Around every association is a ring of businesses that already serve its members β€” the pharmacy near the hall, the restaurant after meetings, the supplier everyone uses β€” yet have no relationship with the association itself. Here is how a member's introduction turns them into partners who offer something to every member, and how a partner becomes the easiest member to recruit.

Walk out of any association's meeting and look around. There is the restaurant where members eat afterwards. The pharmacy on the corner that half of them use. The printer, the optician, the garage that everyone recommends to everyone else.

These businesses already serve the association's members, week after week. They know them by name. And yet, in most cases, the association and the business have never spoken. The business has no idea how many of its customers belong to the same community; the association has no idea how much its members already spend there.

Every association is surrounded by partners it hasn't met yet β€” and its members already know every one of them.

The first thing an association needs is a way in for a business that is not a member. Joining as a member is the wrong door for a pharmacy that simply wants to offer something to the people it already serves.

Your association’s link

Join as a member

For a person who wants to belong β€” the membership form.

List your business offers

For a business β€” member or not β€” that wants to offer something to your members.

The same association link asks a visitor which door they want.

So the same link an association shares for itself asks a visitor which door they want: join as a member, or list your business offers as a partner. A business β€” member or not β€” can come in through the second door, tell the association what it would offer, and go through the same checks as any other partner.

The member who makes the introduction

The best partners, though, rarely arrive on their own. They arrive because a member said: you should offer something to our association. A member's introduction carries something a cold call never can β€” a customer's word.

  1. 1.Member β€” Refers a business they know, from the app β€” name, contact, what it might offer.
  2. 2.Business β€” Opens the link, confirms with a code sent to its own phone, and agrees.
  3. 3.Association β€” Reviews the partnership, and approves it β€” or declines, with a reason.
  4. 4.Business β€” Signs in with the verified phone and lists its offers, each reviewed before members see it.
  5. 5.Members β€” See the offer in the app, show their card, and the saving is recorded.

The referring member follows it in the app: waiting for the business, in review, approved.

Nothing goes live without the business agreeing and the association approving. The member is told at each step.
  1. The member refers the business from the app β€” its name, who to speak to, and what it might offer.
  2. The business confirms. It receives a link, confirms with a code sent to its own phone, and agrees to the partnership. Nothing goes further on someone else's say-so.
  3. The association reviews the partnership, and approves it β€” or declines it, with a reason.
  4. The business lists its offers. It signs in with the phone it verified and publishes offers for the association's members. Each offer is reviewed before any member sees it.
  5. Members use it. They see the offer in their app, show their digital membership card at the counter, and the saving is recorded.

The member who made the introduction is told at each step, and can follow every business they have referred in the app β€” waiting for the business, in review, approved. In the association's records, the partner shows who referred it.

Why a member's introduction beats a sales call

  • Trust transfers. The business hears about the association from a customer it already values, not from a stranger with a pitch.
  • The fit is proven. A member only refers a business they actually use. The association gains partners its members already like, rather than whoever answered an advertisement.
  • The benefits spread beyond your own trades. A professional body or a residents' association may have few members who run shops. Partners bring everyday value from the businesses members use anyway.
  • Nothing publishes without the association. The business confirms on its own phone, and the association approves both the partnership and every offer.

What a partner sees

Once approved, a partner is not left guessing whether the relationship is worth it. From the app, it records the offers members use β€” at its counter, through a simple link its staff can use without an account β€” and sees what the association's members brought it, this month, this year and all time.

That record matters twice. It keeps the partner offering, because it can see the business the offer brings. And it tells the association which partners its members value most. (Why a recorded discount behaves so differently from a coupon is the subject of The Discount That Comes Back.)

The partner ladder

A partner starts as a business that simply serves members. It does not have to stay there.

  1. Serves your membersAlready their pharmacy, their restaurant, their supplier β€” unknown to the association.
  2. Becomes a partnerIntroduced by a member, approved by the association, offering to every member.
  3. Sees the valueWatches what members bring β€” month by month, from its own records.
  4. Takes partSupports an event, is named as a partner, meets the members in person.
  5. JoinsThe same link it came in through has the other door: join as a member.
A partner is the easiest member to recruit: it already knows what the association is worth.

A partner who can see the value members bring is well on its way to believing in the association. Invite it to support an event and be named as a partner; invite its owner to a meeting to meet the members in person. And when the time is right, remember that the same link it came in through has the other door. A partner is the easiest member to recruit: it already knows what the association is worth.

Value, party by party

The member who refers

A way to do something useful for fellow members with businesses they already trust β€” and to be seen doing it. There are no points or prizes built in; how to thank the members who bring in partners is the association's choice, and a public thank-you at the next meeting goes a long way.

The business

A whole membership reached through one relationship, arriving with a customer's recommendation β€” and a clear record of the business that relationship brings.

The members

Everyday value at businesses they already use, with the association's approval behind every offer.

The association

Benefits that reach beyond the trades its members cover, partners chosen by its own members, and a steady line of businesses that already know what belonging is worth.

Putting it to work

  • Ask the question at your next meeting: "Which business do you use that should offer something to all of us?" Then show members how to refer it from the app.
  • Share both doors. Put your association's link where businesses will see it, so a business can come to you, not only the other way round.
  • Review promptly. A business that confirmed an introduction and hears nothing will not wait. Approve or decline, with a reason, within days.
  • Show partners what members brought, and thank the members who introduced them β€” publicly.
  • Invite your best partners in further β€” to an event, to a meeting, and in time to membership.

The businesses around your association already serve your members. Ask your members to introduce them.
